Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States. As of 2018, about 34 million US adults smoke cigarettes, and every day, about 1,600 young people under 18 try their first cigarette. Excessive alcohol use contributes to more than 95,000 deaths in the United States each year, shortening the lives of those who die by an average of 29 years.
